As a Charleston wedding planner, there are some celebrations that stay with you forever — not just for their beauty, but for the heart behind them. Emily and Myles Kreher’s private residence wedding on Johns Island, South Carolina was one of those days. Blending a colorful, texture-rich Southern aesthetic with deeply personal details, their wedding transformed a raw piece of waterfront land into a vibrant, joyful, unforgettable Lowcountry experience. 

I joined their planning journey about eight months before the big day, stepping into a project with no existing infrastructure — no power, no restrooms, no lighting, no built-in venue support. Just a breathtaking property lined with mossy oaks and marsh views for miles. With trust, teamwork, and a shared vision, we built their wedding from the ground up.

A Lowcountry Ceremony Framed by Live Oaks and Waterfront Views 

For couples dreaming of a Lowcountry wedding ceremony, it doesn’t get more idyllic than this Johns Island backdrop. Grand oaks draped in Spanish moss framed the aisle, while panoramic marsh views stretched as far as the eye could see. Palmetto Strings provided ceremony music that floated through the trees, adding to the naturally romantic environment.

The day’s design focused on a color-drenched, Southern-inspired palette — rich, inviting hues layered with warm neutrals, textured accents, and patterned details. Ivy Farm Flowers brought the vision to life with lush, garden-forward arrangements that complemented the property rather than competing with it.

A Personal + Handcrafted Cocktail Hour Experience 

Cocktail hour showcased some of the most meaningful DIY details I’ve seen at a Charleston wedding.

The highlight?
A custom bar hand-built by the groom, complete with a cane-front detail that perfectly matched the aesthetic. Guests were amazed — and learning it was made by Myles himself became the best conversation starter of the night.

Adding to the atmosphere, the Terra Citrus Linens from Stradley Davidson infused the space with lively color, pattern, and energy. They tied beautifully into the couple’s bold palette and added a refined layer of interest to each cocktail table.

Another showstopping detail:
Myles also built their seating escort display — a stunning wall lined with envelopes containing handwritten letters from the couple to each guest. Ivy Farm Flowers added playful blooms to the empty envelopes, turning it into a heartfelt installation piece.

A Tent Reception Full of Color, Craft, and Meaningful Touches 

The reception took place under a beautifully structured Sailcloth tent from Snyder Events, carefully designed around the property’s old oak trees. Because private residence weddings require everything to be brought in, we created a full lighting plan with Bunn DJ Lighting to ensure the space was both safe and visually striking once the sun set.

Inside the tent, Emily and Myles infused their personalities everywhere:

• Hand-embroidered napkins made by Emily’s mother, each featuring the couple’s custom crest

Bar and catering were provided by Hamby Catering, who delivered a seamless guest experience full of local flavor and thoughtful touches.

A Handmade Cake Filled With Family Love 

One of the sweetest details of the entire day was the wedding cake — literally and emotionally. Emily’s sister Grace, owner of Graceful Cake Company, lovingly crafted the couple’s cake by hand. In a wedding filled with personal touches, this stood out as one of the most meaningful. The cake became a heartfelt symbol of family, creativity, and the deep love that surrounded Emily and Myles throughout their celebration. It was the perfect finishing touch to a reception designed with intention and heart.

A Silent Disco to Beat the Curfew — The Ultimate Reception Win 

One of the biggest planning challenges was the 9:00pm noise ordinance at the property — a common hurdle for private property weddings in Charleston. With an October sunset around 7pm, the couple worried their reception would end just as the party was beginning.

As their planner, I wanted a solution that was both seamless and unforgettable.

And then it clicked:
A silent disco.

Emily and Myles immediately loved the idea. We brought in LED headphones that synced directly to Mike Marsico’s DJ setup, with live saxophone from Steven Galloway adding a dynamic twist. Guests flipped between music channels, danced under the tent, and absolutely loved it — even the older guests we assumed might skip it were the ones partying the hardest.

The silent disco kept the celebration going until 10:30pm without violating the noise rules, turning what could have been a limitation into one of the most talked-about moments of the entire wedding.

Afterward, Coastal Limousine transported guests to the after-party at Bedford Falls, still buzzing from the energy of this unexpected, joyful twist.

The Planning Wins Behind the Scenes

Building a wedding from scratch on raw waterfront property requires extensive logistics — and this celebration showcased the best of what thoughtful planning can do.

• Wind challenges influenced design choices and even the bride’s hairstyle (we stayed in communication all morning, and she chose an updo — the perfect decision).
  
• Custom lighting solutions ensured guest safety and transformed the property after dark.
  
• Layout planning around historic live oaks maximized the natural beauty without disrupting the landscape.
  
• Generators, power distribution, restrooms, transportation, catering needs, and tent placement were all intentionally designed for flow and functionality.
  

These behind-the-scenes elements are what allow a private residence wedding to feel polished, effortless, and immersive.

A Lowcountry Wedding Filled With Heart 

Emily and Myles poured their creativity, time, and love into every detail — from the letters to guests, to hand-built structures, to embroidered napkins. Their trust throughout the process meant the world, and watching their review arrive after the wedding is something I’ll always treasure.

This day will forever be one of my favorite Charleston weddings — vibrant, heartfelt, meaningful, and unforgettable from beginning to end.
